EarthDye Beard Color for a Shaved-Head Look (2026)

For a gray beard and shaved head, choose EarthDye beard color based on the beard's starting color and the result you want—not on a universal ranking. Black and brown beard shades process for one hour; red shades for 35–60 minutes. Test skin and a beard hair strand before full use.

TL;DR
  • A shaved head does not change EarthDye's beard-dye processing time.
  • Black and brown beard shades process for one hour; red beard shades for 35–60 minutes.
  • Natural Dark Brown and Ash Beach Brown are cool; Natural Brown/Medium Oak Brown and Copper Brown are warm.
  • Mix only with 100–120°F water, after oil-free clarifying prep and both tests.

Which beard shade fits the look?

Natural Dark Brown and Ash Beach Brown are cool browns. Natural Brown (also called Medium Oak Brown), Mahogany, Light Brown, and Copper Brown are warm. A shaved head might make beard color more noticeable, but it does not determine which shade is right. A strand test on the person's own white, gray, or pigmented beard hair is more useful than a claim that Soft Black or Jet Black is the best choice for everyone.

EarthDye hair and beard dyes are plant-based, vegan, hypoallergenic, and made without PPD, ammonia, or metallic salts. Those facts do not guarantee that a person with sensitive facial skin will not react. Do not dye over irritated or broken skin, and do not use hair or beard dye on eyebrows or eyelashes.

Test first

Mix a little of the intended shade with only warm water at 100–120°F. Apply a coin-sized amount behind the ear, leave for one hour, wash off, and monitor for 48 hours. Also test hair: wash test hair twice with an oil-free clarifying shampoo, apply mixed dye to the strand for two hours, rinse with cold water, and shampoo that test strand 24 hours later. Allow 48 hours before a full beard application. The two-hour strand-test step does not change the shorter beard processing rule.

Apply and follow the beard timer

Wash beard hair with an oil-free clarifying shampoo before dyeing; leave no beard oil or heavy conditioner in the hair. Mix EarthDye powder with 100–120°F water only. Different EarthDye powders may be mixed for a tested result, but no lemon, vinegar, tea, coffee, oil, shampoo, or other liquid goes into the paste.

Apply to beard hair evenly and keep the paste away from the eyes and mouth. Process black and brown beard shades for one hour. Process red beard shades for 35–60 minutes: shorter for a lighter result, longer for fuller color, depending on prep and how readily beard hair takes the dye. Do not copy scalp-hair stubborn-gray timing onto the beard.

Rinse with water as cold as is comfortable. An oil-light conditioner may be used after rinsing. Shampoo ideally 24 hours later, no earlier than 18 hours and no later than 48. Apple cider vinegar is optional only as a pre-rinse before applying dye; rinse it away first and do not use it on freshly dyed hair.

FAQ

Does a shaved head change beard-dye processing time?

No. EarthDye black and brown beard shades process for one hour and red beard shades for 35–60 minutes.

Which brown beard shades are cool?

Natural Dark Brown and Ash Beach Brown are cool browns. Natural Brown/Medium Oak Brown, Mahogany, Light Brown, and Copper Brown are warm.

Can a hypoallergenic beard dye still cause a reaction?

Yes. Perform both the behind-the-ear skin test and hair-strand test and allow 48 hours before full use.

Should I leave beard dye on longer for stubborn white patches?

Follow the beard-specific rule: black and brown shades one hour, reds 35–60 minutes. Strand-test the chosen color rather than exceeding the beard time.
